Oftentimes success is just as much about “un” learning things and it is about learning them.

As you read every word of this page, you’ll find that improving your speaking skills is not only about developing new skills but also about eliminating mistakes. As you read on you’ll discover three of the most common mistakes made in public speaking and how to avoid them.

#1 Being All Over the Map with Your Speech

Do you ever find yourself rambling during your speech?

Many people also do.

Instead, you want to have a very focused goal and point to your speech. This allows your audience to follow you and keeps your positive momentum flowing.

I recommend only preparing 3-5 points for your speech. find ways to shorten the concepts you explained. Keep it brief and your audience will thank you.

#2: Overdoing Your Visual Aids

Oftentimes speakers write every word of their speech on a Power Point presentation and try to pass it off as a visual aid. Don’t make this big mistake – think about it – did your audience come to hear you or the computer.

They came to hear you speak, not the computer

Remember, you are the one presenting the speech, not your aids. Err on the side of less rather than more when it comes to aids.

#3: Filler Words

Although a presentation should feel like a conversation with your audience, filler words really have no place in a speech. remove words such as “you know” or “um” from your speech – doing so will allow you to come across much more polished.

As you can see, the above three tips will do wonders in helping you in overcoming public speaking phobia. Remember to always (1) stay focused, (2) minimize your visual aids, and (3)avoid those ‘filler words. If you do this, you’ll be one step ahead of the game.
